960th NOS Airmen, mission reach new heights
Citizen Airmen of the 960th Network Operations Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., pose for a victory shot at the peak of Manitou Incline, a former railroad up the side of a mountain, in Colorado Springs. The railroad tracks have been removed, but the railroad ties remain and serve as the steps up the Incline, which number more than those of Empire State Building. The incline is just under one mile long, but climbs 2,000 vertical feet with an average steepness of 45 percent with some sections as steep as 68 percent. Climbers start at a base of 6,500 feet and end up at the peak at 8,590 feet. The Manitou Incline is considered one of the highest sets of stairs in the world. The outing was a morale and physical training event during the August unit training assembly. (U.S. Air Force courtesy photo)
