Many of you have children, or know of others who have children, and will be escorting them through your neighborhoods for trick or treating on        Halloween.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe and prevent the night from becoming a nightmare.

The first safety tip: wear comfortable shoes. You won’t know how far you’ll have to walk until you get into the neighborhood and see how many houses have their porch lights on, ready for trick or treaters with goodies, so be prepared.

The second safety tip is: plan your route in advance.  If you’re trick or treating in your neighborhood, planning your route will be fairly simple. If for some reason, you’re trick or treating in a different neighborhood, ensure you know where you started and where you will   finish.

The third safety tip is: stay lit and visible. You won’t know how lit the neighborhood will be, so you’ll want to carry a flashlight and know where your children are at all times to prevent accidents.

The fourth safety tip is: ensure costumes fit. Ones that are too long could be a tripping hazard to your children.

The fifth safety tip is: use face paint instead of wearing a mask. This is highly recommended, as you’ll have better vision of where you’re going wearing face paint versus wearing a mask.

The sixth safety tip is: use only rubber or plastic props with your costume, if applicable.  Holding an actual sword or knife with your costume is not wise and can be dangerous, as you may accidently poke or cut yourself or a nearby person with that sharp prop that you’re carrying.

The final safety tip is: inspect candy that is in your bag or basket.  You do not want to eat any unwrapped candy or anything that looks suspicious.
