Joint Base San Antonio-Medina Annex, Texas -- The tax deadline for filing your federal taxes is Monday, April 18.
The ethical standards of conduct rule in 5 CFR § 2635.809 hold Executive Branch employees accountable for paying taxes.
Federal employees must “satisfy in good faith their obligations as citizens, including all just financial obligations, especially those such as federal, state or local taxes that are imposed by law.” Additionally, per AFI 36-2906, Personal Financial Responsibility, “military members will pay their just financial obligations in a proper and timely manner.” Failure to do so subjects the member to administrative or disciplinary action.
To be compliant, you must:
1) have the proper amount of tax withheld from any wages;
2) file your tax return by the filing deadline or file an extension;
3) pay timely, or make arrangements to pay, the proper amount of tax due;
4) review your return for accuracy and keep proper records, as you may need to prove that you filed your return timely; and
5) take action if you discover a tax problem, and respond to any correspondence from the IRS.
Remember: an extension of time to file is NOT an extension of time to pay. Under withholding and owing an estimated tax penalty can be a serious tax compliance problem. Contact the IRS to discuss your payment options if necessary.
The deadline to file state tax returns varies by state; check with your local state department of taxation office.
Several web-based tax preparation companies offer free tax preparation for military members, including reservists.
