960th welcomes cyber detachments

Two new units were “stood up” during the 2016 Commander’s Forum held here Mar. 21-23.

The 960th Cyberspace Operations Group Detachments 1 and 2 were officially activated Mar. 23 during assumption of command ceremonies at the Group Headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Medina Annex.

Maj. Stephen Kowalski assumed command of the 960th CYOG Det 1, which will be located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and charged with integrating Citizen Airmen into Air Force intranet control operations, and providing mission assurance for Air Force  major commands and combatant commanders through network operations and defensive cyber operations on the Air Force Enterprise Network. Det 1 is the Reserve Associate Unit to the 26th Network Operations Squadron. Det 1, with the 26th NOS, operates, maintains and defends 16 Air Force gateways, and provides boundary protection at the service delivery point routers for 237 active duty component, Reserve and Air National Guard locations.

Lt. Col. Samuel McGlynn assumed command of the Det 2, which will be located at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

Det 2 is charged with providing combat mission ready cyber operators to the United States cyber mission forces. Citizen Airmen assigned to this unit will ensure critical enclaves are defended against exploitation and attack using the Cyberspace Vulnerability Assessment/Hunter weapon system, or “CVA-Hunt” as it’s commonly called.
