Statement by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley:

"As we reflect on the events of last year, and the entire 20-year war in Afghanistan, every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coast Guardsman who conducted operations in Afghanistan, over 800,000 in total, should hold their heads high. For more than 20 years, we prevented an attack on the U.S. homeland. Many have sacrificed: 2461 lost their lives, more than 20,700 were wounded in action, and many others still suffering from the unseen wounds of war.

Tragically, on this day one year ago, 13 U.S. servicemembers; 11 Marines, 1 Sailor, and 1 Soldier lost their lives trying to better the lives of others. To each of them, and everyone who served in Afghanistan, I want you to know, from me personally, that your service mattered.

This is personal. And I know it's personal for each and every one of us."
