Statement by the 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark A. Milley on the passing of retired General Colin L. Powell, 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.

"We are saddened by the loss of Colin Powell and we grieve alongside his family. At the same time, we celebrate his profound life of service and significance in American history. He was an inspiring and dedicated Army officer, having served 35 years in uniform and concluding his military career as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He was a model for the Chairmanship, the Joint Staff, and the Nation. He was known for his steadfast leadership, unwavering professionalism, and love of country.

His stalwart counsel and keen advice was sought by Presidents, members of Congress, military leaders, and the American public. He was a Soldier, a Statesman, and a lifelong public servant.  He was a personal friend and mentor to me and he inspired others throughout his life as an example to all of us in uniform – one of the greatest leaders who has ever worn the cloth of our Nation.  In heart and mind, the entire Joint Force is with Alma, his family and loved ones. We honor him now and forever."
