JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- Chief Master Sgt. Shana C. Cullum officially became the sixth 433rd Airlift Wing command chief Aug. 1, 2018 here.
Chief Cullum leads the enlisted force and advises commanders on matters impacting the enlisted force, such as proper utilization, readiness, professional development, training, and quality of life issues. She ensures the commander's policies are widely publicized and understood by the enlisted force, and serves as the functional manager for all assigned first sergeants.
During her previous tours at JBSA-Lackland, Cullum, was assigned in various training positions, including military training instructor from the late 1990’s through 2010.
As the first female command chief for the wing, Cullum hopes to bring a positive impact to the unit.
“Maj. Gen. Scobee nailed it when he said, ‘We’ve changed up command. AFRC has changed more in the last two years than it has in the last 20 all put together.’ And he’s spot on.” Cullum said. “We’re looking at processes, where the wing has been, where the command is going and how to get the wing in line with where the command is going.”
Her goal is to get Reserve Citizen Airmen more involved and get their buy-in on continued growth.
“That’s where my focus is going to be. To get our people educated,” she said. “The way it has always been’ is no more.”
The new command chief is also open to hearing new solutions to problems and working with wing senior leaders to make those effective solutions a reality.
“There’s five of us from different entities… looking at the processes and where we can become more efficient,” Cullum said. “(There) are folks that are chomping at the bit to be part of that solution… there are people that are volunteering, emailing, texting, saying ‘I want to put this development together.’”
With the Secretary of Defense issuing a new memorandum to all branches recently, Cullum wants to ensure the Reserve Citizen Airmen of the Alamo Wing are prepared to meet the challenges and evolving mission.
“Be ready.”
